A few days after the collapse of trade talks with the United States, US President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to Canada. He said, Canada can no longer be exempted, now is the time to teach.
In an interview with Glenn Beck on Wednesday, Trump said he had a ‘pretty good’ deal with Canada. But now that Canada has not come to that agreement, the United States may choose another path.
“They don’t have anything we definitely need”, Trump said. We can somehow move on. A couple of things may be a bit difficult, but they can be found elsewhere. So it’s time to teach Canada—you can’t do it anymore.
The United States imposed a new 50 percent tariff on nearly $20 billion worth of Canadian goods last Saturday after trade talks broke down. In response, Canada announced on Tuesday the imposition of 50 percent tariffs on about $20 billion worth of goods imported from the United States. These duties are scheduled to be effective from September 8. Ottawa has also taken various steps to help affected businesses and workers.
Earlier, Trump announced the imposition of 50 percent duty on Canadian cars and car parts. These duties will be effective from January 1. Canada claims that the reluctance of the United States to increase tariff concessions on medium and heavy vehicles was one of the reasons for the lack of agreement between the two countries.
Meanwhile, Peter Navarro, the top adviser to the Trump administration, has also increased pressure on Canada. In a speech given on C-SPAN on Wednesday, he said that the agreement that Canada will finally reach with the United States may be worse than the agreement proposed last week.
According to Navarro, Canada has rejected the offer, in the future they will no longer have the opportunity to contract on the same terms. He said, you will never get the contract you got and rejected the nose seat. In the end, the deal will be less convenient.
Navarro also commented that the US proposal was very convenient for Canada. He even said he was uncomfortable with how convenient the proposal was for the US. He said Canada had no reason to reject it economically.
Meanwhile, Canada’s embassy in Washington did not immediately comment on Trump’s comments on Wednesday.
US-Canada trade relations have heated up as a result of renewed tariffs and harsh rhetoric between the two neighboring countries. Although there is an opportunity to resolve the dispute through discussion, for now the position of the two countries seems to be opposite to each other.
