The Rural Development Academy (RDA) has claimed success in experimental power generation using flywheel technology (mechanical energy storage system) in Bogra. In this technology, the cost of power generation per unit can be 1 taka 50 paisa, said the concerned.
Last Sunday, the effectiveness of the technology was shown by running two pumps and a welding machine with the electricity produced in the experimental plant in Bandighi area of Erulia.
Those concerned claim that this low-cost technology can change the face of the country’s energy sector in this time of global power and energy crisis. They said that due to the success of experimental power generation using this special technology, a big plan has been undertaken to set up a full-fledged power plant with a capacity of 1 megawatt at a cost of Tk 25 crore.

Acting Director General of RDA informed about the revolutionary potential of low-cost power generation during the visit. Mo. Abdul Majeed Pramanik said, according to preliminary calculations, flywheel technology can cost only 1 taka 50 paisa per unit of electricity generation. Where it is supposed to cost more than 100 crore rupees to generate 1 megawatt of electricity through solar power all the time, it is possible to produce the same amount of electricity with this technology at a cost of only 25 crore rupees.
He also said that work on this technology started from 2004, but after 2010, new possibilities appeared in research. Currently, flywheel technology is being used in different countries of the world including the United States and China. This project of 1 MW power generation has already been submitted to the Local Government, Ministry of Rural Development and Cooperatives and Climate Trust.
RDA Deputy Director Agricultural Engineer Dr. Monirul Islam said that since 2014, their extensive research on the technology has been going on and since 2025, its experimental activities are being conducted on a larger scale. If the necessary money and some ancillary equipment are available, it will be possible to open the low cost electricity of 1 taka 50 paisa for the use of common people.
Expressing satisfaction with the effectiveness on the ground, Member of Parliament Rezaul Karim Badsha said that this initiative to generate electricity at low cost is very promising. All-out cooperation will be given by the government to take the technology to a larger scale.
Experts say that if this low-cost technology is implemented, there will be a revolution in the local machinery industry of Bogra, as well as a cost-effective and environment-friendly new alternative will be created in the power sector.
