1 Bangladesh won the first Test in their history in the third attempt on Australian soil. Earlier in 2003, they played only two Tests in Australia, both of which they lost by an innings.
Among the visiting teams, only England (2 matches) tasted their first Test win in Australia with fewer matches than Bangladesh or South Africa. South Africa also won the match in Australia at their third attempt.
2 This is Bangladesh’s second Test win in 7 matches against Australia. Earlier in 2017, the Tigers got their first win in Mirpur.
Before the Darwin Test, the difference between the wickets taken by the bowlers of Australia and Bangladesh was 1,075. The team with the highest wicket difference won only twice— in 2024 when India won against Australia in Perth with a difference of 1247 wickets and 1,111 wickets during West Indies’ victory in Brisbane that year.
3 In the last decade and a half, Australia has won the toss and lost the Test at home, this has happened only three times. The previous two incidents were against India in Melbourne and Gabba in the 2020-21 series.
This is the first time Australia have lost a Test at home since the Oval in the 2023 Ashes. In between they won the toss in 9 consecutive Tests and won each.
3 Shanto picked up his third Test win outside the country as captain, the highest for a Bangladeshi captain (he led by a total of 9 wins: 3 outside the country, 6 at home).
10 Bangladesh pacers have taken 10 wickets in Australia’s first innings. This is only the second time that all the wickets of the opposition have gone to the hands of the pacers in the —test innings. Bangladesh’s pacers took 14 wickets in two innings in Darwin, which is the joint highest wicket-taker in Tests with their pace attack.
9/111 Hasan Mahmud gave the man of the match bowling performance with 111 runs for 9 wickets in Darwin, which is the second best bowling figure in a match in the Test history of a Bangladeshi pace bowler. His 6 for 55 in the first innings is the third best innings bowling figure by a Bangladeshi pacer in Test cricket.
Hasan Mahmood’s match figure is the third best in a Test debut by a visiting bowler on Australian soil. Earlier, Wasim Akram in Melbourne in 1990 and Maurice Tate in Sydney in 1924 both took 11 wickets each.
198 Australia’s 198 in the first innings in the Test against Bangladesh is their lowest total. It is also the lowest score in any Australian innings against Bangladesh.
5 This is the first time since Kuldeep Yadav in Sydney in 2019 that a visiting spinner has taken 5 wickets in a men’s Test on Australian soil. Since 2000, only a visiting offspinner (Grem Swan in Adelaide in 2010) has taken 5 wickets on Australian soil except Mehdi.
Along with 5 wickets with the ball, Mehdi scored a half-century with the bat in Darwin. This is his fourth feat of fifty and fifer in the same Test match, two of which have come outside the country (the joint highest among Bangladeshi players outside Shakib Al Hasan).
33 Cameron Green played 33 innings to see his first Test century on Australian soil. Only Ian Healy (41 innings) and Bob Simpson (36 innings) scored their first centuries at home with more innings.
300 Jason Hazlewood became the ninth Australian bowler to complete 300 Test wickets. With Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins also on the field in this match, this is the first time in the history of Test cricket that four bowlers have taken 300 or more wickets in an XI.
6 Pat Cummins— is the first in the history of Australian captains to lose against 6 of the 8 different opponents they have faced as Australia’s Test captain. Under Cummins’ captaincy, Australia are yet to lose a Test against Pakistan and New Zealand.
