Due to the increase in the water level of Kaptai Lake due to continuous heavy rains, the power generation of Karnaphuli Pani Power Plant, the only hydropower plant in the country, has increased. All five units of the center have been commissioned to increase water availability. At present 150 MW electricity is being produced from these units.
According to Karnaphuli Water Power Plant sources, the water level of Kaptai Lake is continuously increasing due to heavy rainfall in Rangamati and surrounding areas for the past few days. As a result, the power generation capacity has also increased.
When contacted on Tuesday (July 7) around 8:30 pm, Karnaphuli Water Power Plant Manager Engineer Mahmud Hasan said that all five units of the center have been commissioned since Tuesday evening. At present 150 MW electricity is being generated from five units.
He said that till now due to lack of water in Kaptai lake, only two units out of five units were being kept operational and electricity was being produced. Increasing the amount of water in the lake has now made it possible to start all the units.
Engineer Mahmud Hasan also said that the water level of Kaptai lake is increasing rapidly due to continuous rainfall. If the water rises further, there will be an opportunity to increase power generation.
It should be noted that it is possible to produce a maximum of 230 megawatts of electricity from the Karnaphuli water power plant.
